Here we go again, yet another "thing" with which I have a problem. Why is it that I have to have an AS/NZS 1698 certified crash helmet? There is no change to the manufacturing process in order to meet the AS/NZS standard. A Bell Revolver modular crash helmet from the USA or UK is identical to A Bell Revolver modular crash helmet purchased from the local bike shop or bike accessories, yet, one still has to pay in some cases up to 100% more for the item from the local retailer. The helmet is DOT and SNELL certified, surely thats good enough?
Ive been told that it is to recoup the cost of the AS/NZS 1698 approval of $6000 odd for each brand, model and size imported into the Australia. Now forgive me if I am wrong, but SURELY this should be a manufacturing/marketing cost that the manufacturer should wear in order to break into the Australian market?
