Where do we start?

Before beginning motorcycle lessons in Perth, including Hillarys, Joondalup, and the northern suburbs, every rider must first obtain a learner’s permit from the Western Australian Department of Transport. This is a mandatory requirement before any motorcycle training or instruction can take place. The process involves visiting a local licensing centre and completing a theory test. The test includes both general road rules and questions specifically related to motorcycles. For further details, please refer to the Department of Transport website.

For R-E Class licenses – ie, your first motorcycle license

To prepare, you may wish to try the sample quizzes available online, such as Quiz A, Quiz B, and Quiz C, which provide an idea of what to expect in the theory test. Riders who already hold an R-E class licence may progress to motorcycle training and instruction on open class motorcycles (above the LAMS category), but assessment can only be undertaken after holding the R-E licence for at least two years.

Once you have completed your theory and are ready to take the next step, you can book online through the Department of Transport’s booking system via your DoT Direct account, or phone the Department directly for assistance.

Learning the Ropes

After successfully obtaining your learner’s permit, you can begin structured motorbike lessons in Perth. Motorcycle instruction may be provided by a certified riding instructor or by an individual who has held the same class of licence or higher for at least four years (two years for an R-N licence).
