Getting Your Motorcycle License in Western Australia
Getting a motorcycle license in Western Australia can seem confusing, especially with changes introduced since November 2018. This guide explains each step clearly so you know exactly what’s required to earn your RN (Moped), RE (LAMS), or R Class license.
Step 1 – Pass the Learner’s Test
- Before applying for an RN (Moped) or RE (LAMS) license, you must first pass the learner’s theory test.
- The test is computer-based, with 35 multiple-choice questions.
- You must score at least 28 out of 35 to pass.
- Practise with mock tests online to prepare: Quiz A, Quiz B, Quiz C.
Step 2 – Log Book Requirements
- If you already hold a driver’s license of any class other than RN, you are not required to log hours.
- If you have never held a license or currently hold an RN license, you must log supervised riding hours.
Step 3 – Hold a Learner’s Permit for 6 Months
- You must hold a motorcycle learner’s permit for at least 6 months before progressing.
- Note : There are no time constraints on RN Learners Permits
- Exceptions: if your permit was issued before 4 November 2018 or has been renewed.
Step 4 – Hazard Perception Test (HPT)
The HPT is a seperate computer based test that is required to be completed PRIOR to sitting the PRA.
Step 5 – Practical Riding Assessment (PRA)
- The PRA is conducted by Department of Transport assessors on public roads.
- You must provide a roadworthy motorcycle (your own, borrowed, or from an instructor).
- The test includes:
- Low-speed manoeuvres (O-turns, similar to figure-8s).
- Quick stop (emergency braking from a set speed).
- Hill park and hill start.
- You must wear appropriate safety gear: helmet, long pants, long sleeves, and closed shoes (gloves recommended).
Step 6 – License Issuance and Provisional Periods
- RN (Moped) License:
- Provisional period: 6 months red P plates, then 18 months green P plates.
- Requirement carries over if you later get another license.
- RE (LAMS) License:
- Red and Green P plates requirements are identical to motorcar license requirement. If it’s your first license or you are currently on P plates for your car license, then Red P’s for 6 months and Green P’s for 18 months.
- Must hold for 2 years before upgrading to an Unrestricted R Class license.
- During this period, you may ride an unrestricted motorcycle only under learner conditions (with supervision and L plates).
- R Class License:
- After 24 months with an RE license, you may sit a further PRA on an unrestricted motorcycle.
